Complex Trauma (CPTSD)
Complex trauma forms after exposure to varied or prolonged traumatic events, often interpersonal or even generational in nature. Those exposed to complex trauma can develop coping mechanisms that help at first, but are maladaptive over time. Relationship problems, people pleasing, issues with emotional regulation, depression, low self-worth, and even physical symptoms can be a response to complex trauma. With therapy, you can learn to appreciate the maladaptive behaviors for their initial protection, and then build trust within yourself to respond to life in ways that are more congruent with your values and desires.
Anxiety
I've worked with many clients experiencing anxiety, which is where my love of neuroscience comes in. Our nervous system is a powerhouse in the body, responsible for our response to stress, and it can get "stuck" in a heightened state of anxiety. As a therapist, I utilize techniques to calm the nervous system, including breathwork and movement. Acknowledging the body in therapy is crucial, especially when dealing with anxiety. It's one of my greatest professional pleasures to see clients become less anxious after their work in therapy.
Couples Therapy
I help couples learn to communicate more clearly and in a way that will not fuel arguments, but rather open up the possibility of a deeper connection. It's not easy to learn to communicate differently and regulate emotions with those closest to us, but it might be worth the effort to try.
What's the first session like?
My goal is to create a warm and open-minded environment for you to work through what's getting in the way of feeling whole and generally satisfied in life. We will start with an initial session to allow you to share why you're seeking therapy and anything about your background that is helpful for me to know. I understand this process can be intimidating, and that it might take some time to open up. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to this, and it is my job to bring the structure needed to get us started.
